Jay my painteds like waist to head height about 1-2 metres but on average 1-1.5metres. They will take any nest boxes finch baskets and build their own so a good choice of nests and sites will show you which types yours will prefer. Cordons and saint helenas will prefer Bush and as high as they can get, I've had a nest from my saint helenas that went from the top of the Bush and touched the roof which is about 10cm gap. As for the rest not to sure but I believe long tails like to use boxes or baskets and don't build their own and like there's high also. You should pm tint about the dives he may know about them.

Finches247, what did they nest in, and what did they use for materials?
So basic consensus is put the brush mainly waist to the roof, with a few well placed clumps lower down?
The long tails have been showing interest in a box near the roof, I think just as a roosting nest though.
Any comments on the termites?

Had them make nests in Large Canary nests,or have had them nest in 1 litre icecream tubs.Mine are clumsy at nest builders i usually help them by putting a bit hay in and give them extra if want to add

I just give termites in a stainless steel bowl about 20cm in diameter. Enamel dishes are just as good to prevent escape. Something with sides about 6 to 10 com high. Frozen ones won't matter what they're offered in. PFs are going to find them just as easily as the others no matter what you put them in. Of the species on your list Cordons are likely to be keenest for the termites.

Thanks Tiaris. Are your tri nuns big termite eaters? They're the most shy of the insect eating ones I have, also one of the ones I most want to breed. PFs and Cordons are in there straightaway, then saints, then a bit later in the day the tri nuns have a go.

probably. It's about the right size.
Just have to persuade them to nest somewhere else

Nuns normally only take termites when they have young to feed.
