Hi Dal,i live in ulladulla(south coast)so it doesn't get that cold but it does get down to 0 degrees in winter.
It's good to know that some finches will tolerate those conditions.

Welcome to the forum. For the info/answers people give you to be more relavant North or South NSW would be a better location than just NSW. Just a thought. (started typing this, got called away, finished typing and posting, only to find you beat me too it)

I know others on this forum will offer a lot more information than I can Jenko, but I will say that I was very sceptical about how finches would go in my climate. To the point that I almost went with parrots when I decided to get back into birds. I did my research and the common trend I was getting was that provided you could keep their home draught-free and dry, cold wasn't a major issue. I decided to give finches a go. Since putting my finches in (I got some Zebs right in the middle of winter as my "guinea pigs") we've had repeated mornings of big frosts (below -4) and two doses of snow. Two pair of Zebs out of three are nesting with one sitting on 5 eggs and now, after less than two weeks of being in their (different section to the Zebs of course) my BFP's have built. Build the aviary to protect from draughts/moisture and buy from breeders in a similar climate, and I'm sure you will be fine. There are lots breeders having plenty of success in far worse conditions than what Ulladulla will ever give you, including many on here.

I have been keeping fish and reptiles for about 20 years now but the way electricity prices are going i am really loosing interest in them so i have fallen back to the finches(which i don't mined at all) now all i have to do is build an aviary to the disgust of my wife who is over monster fish tanks and monster enclosure $$$$.

Yeah i think she see's how much money i have put into reptiles/fish over the years and now getting a $1000 quarterly bill is not helping,so i can not blame her.
Should be cheaper having finches(i hope)lol.
