I always thought my finches went quiet for the butcher bird because they we're scared. I'd never realised they were actually giving a minutes silence for the fallen .

Willie wagtails do a melodic whistle (often at night) as well as the usual scratchy daytime call.

When my hears 'The Last Post' he howls . .

But I think he is more concerned about his leg-lifting activity being curtailed





And a nearby farmer has had to stop whistling "There will never be another You"

Some birds can definitely be annoying, the Rufous-collared Sparrow (Zonotrichia capensis) and the Saffron Finches while in South America kept me awake all night on two occasions, they had a nest in a tree right under a street light near the hotel I was staying.They sung over and over at 10-second intervals at other times there were those annoying Frog songs. Every place I've been to had it's own Frog song, often more like a screech than a song, how could anyone possibly sleep!
It take a while to get use to!

I suspect Tiaris is on the money and it was a Willie Wagtail.

Have willy wagtails here, they whistle at night and early morning and make some other sound during the day

Will have to google willie wagtail whistle, though it sounded more like a larger bird call (eg butcher bird) but not melodic like butcher birds usually are.

I've also heard blackbirds sing at night. Could be them
