misso :)
Most gouldians (or any other finch for that matter) bred in the wild also perish...........Nature is a numbers game.....release programs cop undue criticism because we humans are impatient and want instant results with no losses

These wetlands were already on my "to do" list when I hit the road again for 6 months in April.

Hense the earlier question: hard or soft releases?

I'm not sure but i think when the birds were breeding in the aviary they opened the doors and they could come and go as they wished, but as i said i'm not sure. Craig

Craig. That is a hard release.

Available data from Europe suggests that a hard release of bird is a waste of time and money. 70 percent of the birds would dye straight away and the remaining 30 percent dead within months. If they were to breed Gouldians in captivity and just open the doors as you suggest could have happened these figures would be much higher than the 70/30 senario.

I think my money is on the Save the Gouldian fund.

Case,

From all reports the whole project was a well-intentioned but poorly researched and totally flawed affair.

i visited the Mareeba wet lands 2 years ago.It was a conservation area with heaps of cattle grazing.Only finches seen were chestnuts and double bars. There was a small avairy with 10 or so gouldians in it.
I dont think there has been any sightings for a while

Thanks for the reply.

Same goes for NT. They do the odd Gouldian count but no structure and very unscientific. Waste of monies.
