Greg,pic 1and 3 are what you say but pic 2 isn't what i call pit pit grass.Pit pit grass is a tall narrower version of NGPG as in pic .
Pic 2 looks like some sort of cane grass which grows along river banks. Craig

What grows on the riverbanks is the common reedPhagmites australis. This it the species recommended for weaver finch nesting material. I've no idea of the food value of the seed.

As for "pit-pit" grass it seems that the common name may be taken by many tall grasses in Australia. I'm only familiar with the term from the New Guinea species, Miscanthus floridulus, which is used by their nationals to weave walls, screens and even floors in their kuni houses (a grass hut thatched with kuni grass - Imperata cylincicata).

Thanks for that Greg but it's all getting a bit technical for me now that others have thrown in other species of grasses and yes,i do agree with you that there must be many grasses out there referred as pit pit grass. Cheers Craig

That common reed you picture.We have a lagoon full of it here in town.I have thought about feeding some out to the birds a few times.The only thing is when I go there its normally not seeding or I dont have gum boots on me.
Is the second photo pit pit grass or not ? and has anyone got photos of what you call pit pit to compare their specimen.That is the only one so far in this thread I believe I dont have.

Finally someone has put up a pic of the real pit pit grass,thanks Rusty.Gomer i have a mate in Sydney who is a landscaper,he is forever pulling this grass out of his spare plant pots,if you want some i will get some for you but in saying that,it's not a big seeder and seeds that are dropped grow and spread very quickly.As i told you,it looks like annorexcic?NGPG.
