Went really well actually. So well I've decided not to bother with buying millet milkseed again.
I had the best Gouldian breeding season in 2013 that I have had for many years. Reared 82 young from 8 pairs for the year which is roughly 20 more than previous years from the same number of pairs. Quality, size & general vigour of the young birds were very good too.
I should stress that I did continue to offer fresh green foods (mainly seeding grasses, chickweed, etc.) throughout the year as they were freshly available but the sprouted seed was the only consistent daily "soft" seed offering for the whole year - 2 heaped desertspoons per breeding aviary (4-6prs finches) every day.
Parrotfinches (3 species) are also producing well for the past couple of months on sprouted seed. They are the main warm weather green food hogs I breed.
I am not trying to discourage others from using frozen green millet as I think it is excellent finch food in its own right.
