Myzo I hope there aren't to many collectors out there. They may have money but they do cause rare species to go extinct if they aren't simultaneously breeders as well as collectors.

That has always been the problem Greg- for all species.

And Arthur, you are spot on as usual :lol:

So what we are saying about NEBRS is that all of our exotic parrots (Macaws, African Greys etc) have had to be registered at some time after their importation and all of those species offspring have to be registered as well so it can be traced to the original imported birds? I find this quite perplexing because up at the Orange sale I saw pairs of African Greys in the original dark colour, stunning looking birds, but then saw one for sale a distinctive silvery colour. Surely there are not enough of this particular bird in Oz to have mutations coming through? Perhaps I am wrong, as I didnt think that there were that many here.

Did the NEBRS thing only relate to parrots which seemed to be the big money spinners?

Ken.

The silver coloured African Greys are the more common sub-specie and have been around for many decades.

The darker birds are the Timneh African Greys which are a little rarer and more expensive. They are a darker bird with a maroon tail as opposed to the red of the others.

Not a mutation.

The key words are

The department ENCOURAGES bird keepers to:
•make a list of all the exotic birds they have
•divide the list into Class 1, 2 or 3 species
•compile all the documentation they have for each bird
•individually identify high-interest (Class 1) birds
•keep records for transactions involving Class 1 or 2 birds
•send records for high-interest birds to the federal environment department.

Most of those concerned take the inclusion of the word "encourages" to mean that these actions are voluntary;
and like all good soldiers, have not volunteered :silent:
