Thanks all for the messages.
This go around I have a pair of Gouldians, a pair of Red Star Finches and a Cut Throat Cock - Hen croaked it.
I am hoping to add a few more to my 'tank' but just want to see how the new setup goes first

My new setup is an enviro tank/cage and is based on the natural grassey environment in the Keep River area of Northen Australia.
its 900mm wide x 900mm deep x 1100mm high (cage size) and is an indoor unit.

I hope I havent bitten off more than I can chew :)

Sounds like a different sort of setup. Always thought that longer was better than higher for finches but. And the 1squ mtr per pair rule would come into question here too. Though we all know that is only a very rough guideline which varys according to the mix and type of finches. Look forward to seeing and hearing more about the success of your venture.

Cage / tank is finished however the base cabinet is still a work in progress - will post some pics when I can

I am not sure what the 1 pair per metre rule is. There is a range of advice and no doubt debate over how many finches can be kept comfortably in a cage. I plan to see how it goes with the 5 birds and add or subtract as I need too.

My cage / tank is that shape and size to reflect another tank that I have which is a vivarium housing frogs.

I appreciate the advice and comments.
