As you say, let the 3 pair weather the winter, then add the 4th pair come spring. And then the nests, and watch things happen. Give them a little seeding grasses from mid winter to encourage them so they will be all ready to go when they get the nests.

Can i ask a question in regards to my ruddies and you mentioning the seeding grasses?
I have struggled to get them to eat a variety of foods with white millet and red pannicum the only thing they really eat out of the finch mix, meaning I'm woried about their nutrition. Ive tried seeding grasses, sprouting the seed mix and various vegies. They did eat some mealworms when they had young in the nest once. So, i tried just sprouting the two seed types they ate and they actually ate it. Does it seem like a good idea to keep doing this or should i be trying other things to get them to eat a variety of foods?

Both are good ideas. But in the end they are individuals and will do what they will do. A very effective way of getting any finch particularly young ones to eat new foods is to add a canary to your avairy. They will try practically anything, and the young finches are more likely to eat what they see another bird eating. Good luck. Love the Ruddies.
