Sexing birds....How do you do it

Canaries: vent is tje best way outside waiting for them to sing. Even still I failed thus method last week. Forgot which vent form was which.

Goldfinch: cock birds have black on the wings near the shoulder joint. Hens have brown and sometimes very little black.

Cocks have the red in the mask going passed the eye in hens it stops before.

Young painteds can be sexed by the colour under the beak. Colour = cock bird.

I know some people feel for the pelvic bones. .wider fir hens narrow for cock birds....I dont like this method fir finches. I think parrots its a little less risky.

If both sexes are visually identical I dna them if the bird is worth more than $200. If under 200 I just buy a few at a cheaper rate and try my luck. Once paired up you can separate the spares.

Main method with canaries is the cock singing strongly and loudly. The hens chirp. The cocks colour is usually a bit brighter/stronger.

In breeding condition from August the cocks vent usually starts to be pointed down towards legs, whilst the hens vent is still back.

Even so I have made 3 mistakes over the last 2years with hens that have sung well enough for me to think that they were cocks, and they then laid eggs.

Well I have a higher success rate with the diomorphics now than I did 10 years ago. And a 100% success rate with those that are not diomorphic.

I had to look up the word DIMORPHIC and the opposite MONOMORPHIC in Mark Sheperds " Aviculture in Autralia" to try and make sense what "Finchbreeder"
was trying to say. Are you really telling us that you are now good at sexing Dimorphic and 100% at sexing Monomorphic. I have a feeling that you are trying tell us that you are good,

Thats what you get for poping on the computor in your work break when you are in your busy period working. Brain overload. Yes I did mean the other way round. And rumor has it I am never good, always bad.
