Canaries: vent is tje best way outside waiting for them to sing. Even still I failed thus method last week. Forgot which vent form was which.
Goldfinch: cock birds have black on the wings near the shoulder joint. Hens have brown and sometimes very little black.
Cocks have the red in the mask going passed the eye in hens it stops before.
Young painteds can be sexed by the colour under the beak. Colour = cock bird.
I know some people feel for the pelvic bones. .wider fir hens narrow for cock birds....I dont like this method fir finches. I think parrots its a little less risky.
If both sexes are visually identical I dna them if the bird is worth more than $200. If under 200 I just buy a few at a cheaper rate and try my luck. Once paired up you can separate the spares.
