I'm not too sure about the importance of the protein content of lettuce seed as I always thought that it was relished as an oil seed by those birds that go for it - particularly in Europe. If lettuce is too expensive try niger (Guizotia abyssinica) which if it's not available from your bird suppliers might be available from Indian food stores (sold as Ramtil).
