i suspect its an inner ear issue and that the birds die actually from dehydration and starvation from not being able to eat properly.
Until recently I have never had a bird survive although recently I "cured" a saint that certainly had some advanced twirling-like symptoms such as disorientation and flipping itself upside down. i kept eye dropping vitamin water into his mouth and amazingly he improved after 24hr or so. but it could have been something else.
but agree that euthanasia is often the most humane approach.
