Im with matty,I would take one step at a time.A grand or two is alot to loose on a pair of birds. You can get some not so common birds for two to three hundred a pair.

some not so common finches here in WA are like diamond firetails, cutthroats, redbrows, bloods to name a few. and at least if you do loose one youll be able to replace it a bit easier thatn the rare finches.

Totally agree with evry one on this...imagine the heartbreak if you lose any of the rare and expensive finches not to mention the money.......

with any birds you buy you need to build the right type of housing research their requirements and have it all inplace before birds arrive.
and a good bit of advice is you cant have livestock without having died stock at times and any losses are no good but the rare,<dearer> ones can hurt more.

another way to look at this would be to consider any finch that you currently do not have in your aviary as being rare

here s a good piece of advice i was told by a friend of finchers and mine. birds buy birds, birds dont buy seed. its a hobby all hobbies have a cost whether your breeding birds or not they need to be fed and cared for appropriately.so if you have zebbies or violet eared waxbills or just a pet budgie the cost to feed is relitvly the same( are you still with me) so your day to day cost come from every day expenses as you still have to feed them.gee i am crap tonight with the spelling.so if your your lucky enough to breed some birds the money you get from the sale goes toward more birds either the same species to improve your blood lines or to save for the more expensive and the dollars just keep rolling over. i re started into birds 8 years ago with a couple of zebs and its just kept going from there....now i have to many birds (not really the boss is behind me).....pete
