Vet here...Fipronil is extremely toxic to birds, its mostly been studied in game species but it is toxic.
Exposure to light also transforms fipronil into an even more toxic form.

It should not be ingested by anything other than its target so I wouldn't be smearing it on perches.

It is gradually being banned around the world due to its effects on bees , so its environmental effects are of concern too

Just for the record Fipronil is marketed under the name of Frontline. It will kill any invertebrates and is NOT recommended in avairys.

And just to completely change the topic: A vet told me a few years ago that Frontline is largely worthless these days as fleas have become quite resistant to it.

So I found out last year, when my cats (yes I know I am mentioning the dark side) got loose and I had to kill off the resulting infestation.
