I mostly use branches I prune from my mulberry and cape lilac trees myself. The mix of sizes and textures is good for their feet.
While the wild birds are always in my chinese pepper trees, I don't use them. A bit paranoid about the sap where I prune them.
With what I do use, I don;t worry about if they have just been cut, or if I cut them a week or month ago.
