Further on toads/ frogs . . . Found a great website called "Australian Newspapers on line" where you can find all newspapers in all states . . after a bit of browsing (idle hands are the devils tools) came across a photo gallery in Daily Mercury (Mackay Q) which shows green frogs eating tree snake, carpet snake and white rat . . . well worth a look for anyone who thinks that those cute froggies would not eat a finch or indeed even larger birds . . Still dont have the skills or would have posted same . . but easy enough to find the site

Just an update to report some reproductive successes just two months after the removal of the cane toad from my main aviary. I've told in previous posts that my Javas have finally bred but they were never exposed to the toad and that some of the cut-throats that were removed from the toad affected aviary started laying 2 months after they were removed and have since managed to fledge young but the ones in the "toad" aviary are still without eggs. On the positive side there are things going on in my former toad aviary now. Aside from my crazy Diamond sparrows being onto their 7th nest I have heard young begging deep in the brush for the last few days and this morning I found a hatchling Star (identified from mouth marking on http://www.efinch.com/gape.htm) dead in the water-dish. Z3bra finches are making a nest and Hecks are becoming amorous. If it weren't for the youngsters I'd like to change the brush as it's become a haystack of abandoned Diamond sparrow nests. I also think I should exchange the soil for sand on the floor of the aviary too as it too may be affecting the birds.

The changing the soil sounds like a good stratagy Greg.

Wel I never did get around to changing the soil since it would have disturbed my nesting birds. I know that there is a nest of close to hatching stars and Hecks in the aviary. The Diamonds are on their umteenth nest which will no doubt will have 2 sterile eggs as usual (I think I purchased somone elses problem). If there are no more active nests I will do the clean out I suggested earlier but I just don't want to risk it yet.

Sounds like you need to try and source and add another Diamond.
In the hope that it is a fertile male.
