I don't like the light idea. as someone here once put it, "I don't want the local cat's having a field night while I'm asleep"

There is that thought too, I guess I just remember the birds bouncing off the wire when something startled them. I can put the back light on for one, possibly two aviaries if that happens. It was just the main aviary I was worried about.

Here is another one I found at the Reject Shop called "Fly Catcher". If you turn it up side-down install a light in the dish it can be used as a Moth Trap. I don't really need it but for $4 I bought it anyhow!

Night lights
I have the new type fluo globes right through my set of aviaries.
I do not have a problem with Owls,Cats or other preditors,the birds don't get startled and fly away to a safer area if pannicked for some reason(next door letting off fire crackers)Even in my big aviary there is a 1200mm(4ft) long fluo light fitting.
On summer nights the birds actual catch bugs attracted to the light.
You can not compare the contents of a fly trap to other simpler ways.
In summer a decent moth trap can catch a huge amount of insects, any Softbill breeder should have one and most do.

This is the one I made the other day with parts I had in the shed . The fan I found at the dump wile looking for cricket freezers ( another story) Round up drums (top and bottom cut out of one ) one light fitting and 40 watt globe( going to get a black light globe) and 25 kg seed bag to slide over drum (perfect fit)works like a charm best part of all 0$ only half an hour of time (rainy day ).

I agree with you, I have 4 small solar lights and 1 solar flood light that turn on automatically when it gets dark, the lights only last for about 6 hours but in the morning the aviary is full of Moths, you can see them on the foliage and all over the wall of the aviary. Young Wrens have fun chasing them, there are by far more Moths then what the birds can consume.

There are lots of various sizes small fans used in computers that can be used in moth traps (and hospital boxes) if anyone's interested in building one, it will save you bit of money on electricity! Otherwise you can install a light it will cost the same or use the $20 solar "flood lights"
