Hi Pete do you still have some extra grass? and whereabouts in perth are you? going to grow plants from seed mix and also pick some small weeds from our garden but both will take a while to be big enough to do anything with.... Getting finches in the next week or two (working in getting aviary ready) and want to make sure we have grasses. is the other grass the purple fountain grass? do they like it? thanks.

I had a tub of purple fountain grass in my main aviary last year. The birds didnt eat it from what I could see, but the emblemas did nest in it.

So it sounds like the fountain grass would be more for ornamental/nesting purposes than food...

If you get wild "pussy tail bush" which is the parent plant of the domesticated purple fountain bush, your birds will also use it to line their nests but also eat it a little. It's seed is not sterile as the domesticated purple fountain bush seems to be. Have recently planted some in my front garden and pot. And my mother has been using it successfully with her Gouldians and
Canarys for some time.
