even if the snake ever got out of his cage he for sure as hell cant get in the box snakes are not the smartest animals and they dont have claws or hands
Don't be so sure, snakes can get to places you think are impossible. I had a snake get into my bird room, wich at the time was even mouse proof, into a cabinet 2 feet off the ground & had another 6" to get to the 1/4" wire & took my 3 most expensive show red factor canaries, $400 ea. I've even had one of my snakes open the glass sliding doors on their enclosure. The finch may not know the snake is there, but you can bet the snake knows the finch is.

It is a hard question , the longer he is inside the harder it will be to adjust to the cold outside then again if he goes out too soon he may not have recovered.
Maybe a transitional time in the house but not in the heated room , just be sure to cover him at night , might pay to keep him in till spring and warmer weather .

As most snakes are nocturnal, day light hours are spent sleeping. I had a snake get in and eat my hen Varied Lorikeet during the night, the next morning the cock was still flying around the cage, the snake was asleep in the nest box.

It's a 1/2" wire suspended cage 5' off the ground, & it was a 2 1/2" carpet snake, not even Orangebreats can get out of it. About how long to keep it inside for, I agree with Jusdeb, if outside temperatures get really cold where you are it would be best to keep it in till it warms up, but I would put it where it can get plenty of sunlight, so you don't get any feather problems when it moults, due to lack of vitamin D.

You could put me inside the best snake proof cage on earth and have a snake outside and chances are Im still gonna need clean undies and very possibly a defibrilator to restart my heart. :o

Because of the type of skeleton a snake has it can sort of dislocate it's skeleton to go through a hole smaller than it appears to be able to. Had a snake over a metre long come into one of my avairys once. Upon careful inspection it appeared it had followed the mice through their hole. More mouse proofing needed. If your snake is well fed Cate and being a pet I have no doubt it is, it is a lot less likely to even try to find a way out of it's enclosure. Snakes like most creatures know when they are well off. This does not mean it could not get out and get your finch, it just means it has no wish too. Read GregH post about the snake problems he has had in his avairys. Hungary snakes are incredibly capable of getting into the smallest holes in the most unpredictable places.
