There is another reason to limit ringing birds prior to fledging(close ringing is different matter)
If it is a specie that likes having a clean nest chamber(not on the rim) you may find the female thinking the ring is a piece of dropping or such and pulling it out of the nest and out will come the chick and end up on the floor.If you are cage breeding you may see the chick in time,in an aviary doubtful.
If you are wanting to put split rings on wait until the chicks fledge.It's a personal choice I guess.
