Coccidia is fatal to birds brought on by shock (relocation being handled etc.)a simple treatment is available to add to water.

I have a young 8 month old Gouldian that has lived on the floor of the aviary for the last month or so. Can fly half-way up to land on a lower branch. Seems ok. I had a perch / swing suspended with a length of wire at either side. I took it down as i am guessing in flight not seeing it, the bird has flown into and hit the wire, injuring itself. Lesson learnt.

With the weather being decent this time of year, i am hoping the bird goes back to full health.

I use Coccivet but there are heaps of medications around containing a Coccidia treatment.

Shaun,
There's been a bit of rain around over the last week, can you tell me what your aviary floor consists of and how wet it gets.I use coccivet as well.

It is washed 20mm riverstone over a bed of washed river sand the perimeter has 400mm x 400mm pavers cut into the ground. It is a planted aviary, and drainage is pretty good, had heaps of rain though.

My opinion I would never use river sand on aviary floor for small birds, I only recommend sydney/newcastle sand. I find that river sand has contaminants that affect the birds, you never know the quality of river sand or where it has come from. Others may disagree but myself and other breeders i know never use river sand for finches or similar. How many birds do you have in the aviary?

I find that removing dirty river sand is a pain. If it gets even slightly wet, it weighs a TON>
s now I'm using Gravel. Or, I will be. soonish.

There are times when I appreciate living in a (mostly) hot dry climate. :D Though even here we are careful about coci.
