Maybe some bird keepers are like me , that is well and truly over spending $$$ on foodstuffs that the birds are suppose to need only to have to throw it in the bin coz the bloody birds wont eat it .
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

Yeah. What works for some people wont for others. Actually spoke with them yesterday and they dont feed mealworms at all just the Milkseed and Greens. Yet people stand by that particular birds need mealworms etc etc.

Hey Matt, is that the same as the 'green' seed you showed to me which you buy through your local club?
How long does it keep in the freezer for? How many kg's in one of those containers mentioned earlier in topic??

Bleeding Green - Yes that is green milk seed. I buy it from Ace Colony. Not cheap at around $35 per container which is 3 litres. It keeps well in the freezer for months.
Deb - I don't think you'd find a finch that doesn't go nuts over green seed. It's always the first thing to disappear in my aviaries. Well worth every penny.

Would you come and pick the johnston grass here, we spend 10's of thousands of dollars a year here spraying it and trying to grade it out of our sorghum !!! having said that I can just walk around the paddock in front of the house and pick fresh seed every day. I just pick handfuls of all different types of grasses that are going to seed, then when they are finished they use the stalks for nesting.bluebutterfly213 wrote:The only thing Im doing is growing Johnston grass and Guinea grass for the seed in them. Trouble is I have to get at it before the wild birds do, so its being delivered to my birds one stalk at a time. Not the ideal situation but at least its something. I have looked into getting some milk seed but from what I have found out you need to order quite a bit at one time.
Surely there is paspalem or somethin growing around your areas that you can just pick without having to go to the trouble of keeping it frozen ? Maybe not ?
