lol - I was thnking the same thng Alex - it's like heads or tails...
Anyway, to clarify my choice of hen - with many mutations the colours have become so distorted I don’t tend to trust them as in a normal bird – ie. Bright colour must be a cock. In this instance I note the posture, and over all shape of the bird. From this perspective it screams hen, but yes, the intense colour does say cockbird. So I am going out on a limb (or perch!) and stick to hen!

I dont know its history or parents. Also ive put a definate hen in with it and its not singing or anything. Ive had the hen in since this morning. When i look at my other cock birds there breast is just a little bit more brighter then the yellow bird.
Man its tough! Im hoping its a hen

I agree the depth of yellow color on the abdomine suggests cock bird, however the poster and the darkness of the beak tells me hen...If it was a cock I would have expected the beak to be pearl white...although with this time of the year if may not be in 100% breeding condition yet...also age of the bird may be the reason beak doesn't clearly say cock or hen....any way my guestimate would be very good quality colored yellow back hen...do you have your cocks and hens in seperate avairies...once she is out of quarantine by placing her in one of your avairies I think she will confirm her status as a hen..cheers, Paul

My money would be on it being a nicely coloured hen.

I am not much help either,I only have one black headed yellow back hen,As they are not my cup of tea,I have my one because its split to blue.Anyway I think it has the shape of a hen.And colouring is better then my hen for sure. But not as good as a cock.It has a blue hint around the mask, which could indicate to me a cock or possible split to blue ?If i had to pick either with the info suplied i would pick a cockbird. It will be easier when the moult finishes.
Also I would needle it to check myself.

How do i needle it gomer!!??? I would love to know how to do that! I took my hen out of its cabinet and put another cock in there with it. Still the same its not puffing up and singing.
If all else fails i guess i put it in the main aviary and just observe.

The colours are defined & deep enough to make me think it's a cock bird.Good strong yellow under the wings.
Best of luck.

I sure would not take a bet either way. Place it in the avairy once quarantine is complete and observe seems to be the go.
