Welcome back, glad you had a fun break. Now if VR would just post we could all relax and not worry about where the floods are and who is and isn't safe.

from memory VR1 is often away working or too busy to get online for a week or more at a time... sure he's fine.
bit green with envy of E orix, as i'm sure everybody else is!! would love to do a birding trip, probably will when I'm up north (Broome) next. know some people from the bird observatory there who i helped capture, tag, measure etc etc over 650 shorebirds back in July. what a day that was!! they were glad to have a volunteer who knew what they were doing though
some of the others were a bit clueless! was good fun, but will have to try and do something with inland birds next time, don't know nuts about shorebirds, but gimme a finch and i'll tell you what its thinking!
hope to hear from VR soon, sure he's fine though

Spanna there is a station N/N/E of us, out in the middle of the state, that does an annual bird count. Will ask hubby for the details. Know he got them to tell the daughter about it, her being a trainee environmental scientist like yourself.

For those into bird watching our group registered 244 species
from Vultures to Violet Ears and Swee Waxbills.
Being interested in the Weavers,Whydahs and Finches the rest went into several groups big, recognisable and LBJ's(little brown jobs.
I was pleasently surprise how much I enjoyed seeing all the animals, they seem different in the wild rather than in enclosures
Also Elephants look real real big especially from the seat of a car.
For the car nuts we ordered a 4 wheel drive to drive from Cape Town to Durban, when we went to pick it up it was not available.
So they gave us a nearly brand new BMW,it was fine as we drove it thru areas that we wouldn't normally take a car but would have taken the 4 wheel drive.
Actually it handled well going down game trails. On a H/Way travelling at 150kmph we were passed as if we were stopped. They drive rapidly over there but its very easy to drive just like Oz.
When my son has time I will post some pictures, even one of our Cape Town member, her husband and her aviary set up.
By the way there were Grey Waxbills and Pintailed Whydahs in her back yard.

Glad you back safe and sound EOrix. Still rather bummed you never got the wonderful sunshine.
Yip the roads do have some real speed freaks on them. The open road is the "open" road and some out there simply don't think anyone else uses them.
I would also love to see your pics. So cool you got to see wild Violet Ears...
