Never used anything other than Passwells Multiclens (I believe that other company also makes summat the same) which is Chlorhexidine based so summat like that might be available where u are located.

Works a treat.

I like the Virkon S method. I use to do the bleach and in the fridge method and rinse rinse rinse, but have never had a bad batch with Virkon and so simple. I place a t-spoon of virkon in a plastic bowl, and fill a standard kitchen sieve with finch mix. I sit the sieve of seed in the bowl and fill with water until the seed is covered. I let soak for 12 to 24 hours depending on air temp. Warmer weather = less time. I then remove sieve from water and allow to drain, normally over an ice cream container, until seeds start to germinate. No rinsing. I tip the seed into a contianer and refridgerate. Depending on feed rate it normally lasts between 2 and 4 weeks.
Cheers Tony

I feed sprouted seed on a daily basis, usually during breeding season and much less so out of season. I don't soak linseed/flax or rape as I found they go slimey and just stick to the bowls.

Basic soaked seed is millets (pannicum, french white, jap), manna, canary and grass seeds.
I soak them overnight in water with Virukill avian (product from SA much like VirkonS) or you can soak for 2-4hrs and get the same result.
I drain and rinse with water, then final rinse with virukill solution, drain and leave to sprout in a sealed container at room temperature

As soon as the seeds start germinating I divide the batch up into daily portions in ziplocks and quick freeze. This way a batch of soaked seed can last me a month or so.

Daily I just take out a bag and defrost then feed it added to my egg food and veg.

I was trying to give it to them fresh daily, but what a chore to do that.

Buzzard-1 wrote:Everyone I speak to has their own recipe that works for them, I myself use finch mix x 2kg for four hours then add 1kg Niger and soak for a further 8hrs till chits are just visible(Depending on ambient air temp).Vircon S or similar water cleanser is a must. Then I hang the fine mesh bag up to allow to drain and then freeze. I then mix a small amount of egg and biscuit, vitamins, crushed egg shell and crushed charcoal into Chinese plastic containers. Mike Fidler has a good DVD out called at home with Mike Fidler that explains his way that is a good example. Here is a link to part one. If you have a petshop nearby you would probably get Multicleanse, a local bird shop would have it too. If you are able to get to a bird sale that has commercial stalls they would also have for sale
I paid $25- $30 (I think) for a litre bottle of Multiclense from a bird sale, one teaspoon per 10 litres of water, so it goes a long way.
