Extruded was just a suggestion ...I do feed my conures pellets on which they thrive however my other birds are on seed ...hardly an obsession just suited the conures who wasted a hopper full of seed each day .

Again different strokes for different folks ..

Never had a need to change from seed with finches however that could change now the only supplier of Avigrain in the West of NSW is stopping sales ..I already travel 4 hours round trip to get them their seed as local seed is crap.

Sorry didn't mean to make it sound personal couldn't have been further from my intentions ..........just, as you say, conures and tropcal species benefit from such diets and no-one wants to see the Vitamin K deficiencies of the "bad old days" in such species.
Guess it also explains why such a surge in their numbers.
Can't see the point of such things for finches...... guess the old hands can teach us a thing or 2 without those "new fangled concoctions"!!
Makes me fear for what all that protein is actually doing to their livers - finches that is!!!

You dont loose much seed if you winnow it either, Maybe not as good the second time round. The left overs give a good very cheap feed to chocks, cows, horses or wild birds etc in moderation.
Not to sure if parrots digging out seed hoppers are trying to tell us somthing, like maybe the mix needs to be modified.Or maybe they just enjoy digging.

Hubby gives the winnowed seed to the chooks it gives them something to scratch around for during the day along with their normal food and greens.

Seed has been a pain in the xxxx since I started out with birds here , cant get good seed or it costs a fortune to obtain good seed . Of all the birds I would feed finches extruded only if I had no choice .
Extruded has been broken down into different styles of feed for different parrots ie. Sth American for Conures , macaws etc however finch pellets is still a one size fits all type of thing .
Their metabolism is so much different to parrots blah blah yes it is the new fashionable way to feed birds bur frankly its such a pain to get the birds to eat it you really need to be 100% sure the birds will benefit , as is finches wouldn't in my opinion however again I don't know what I'm going to do when Avigrain is unavailable to me.

What about the Natures Organic Seed through Seed Distributors Deb? Can you get that locally, or something from Seed Distributors, I think they have an Area Manager for where you are.

Tried them all Di last time ( before I found Avigrain )..have enough to last a while ( down to just a few finches at the moment ) will happily put all the parrots onto pellets if need be .

Big decision to be made if seed is going to be such a drama ( had downsized in prep of concentrating on one specie ) if seed doesnt become available will get out of finches altogether

Freight out here makes seed way over the top $$$$$. but will email elenbee for a quote.
