Jayburd, I've been thinking of coming along to your club's sale coming up shortly if I manage to make myself some sale cages by then. If you get your act together and get some wire on that aviary of yours, I'll bring a pair along for you. Haven't forgotten about you either Ben, just in the process of finding some young unrelated cock birds.
In regard to them getting fat. This can happen if they are left on a breeding diet and they aren't actually breeding! Time out on a millet only diet (I feed mine the normal finch mix just without canary seed) for a couple of months will trim them down.

having succesfully bred parrot finches, live food is not a must, i tell everyone remember this motto, keep them lean, so feed them greens, then many young will be seen.
with tanibars I found, as finch162 stated, they might leave their nests at night, so dont overcrowd it will frighten them when nesting. With being overweight try and get your aviary to be square, so they can fly from one side longer distances than up and down the aviary. Im sure Jayburd with your passion you will succeed. If you want just give the birds live food every second day, only when breeding.

Sorry Shox I didn't mean they were light sitters its just, like red siskins, that they don't willingly sit on their chicks after around 8 days........a natural trait. Some do but most don't.......
With weight try to make your perches as far apart as possible....make em fly further!!!

Also try keeping them in a flock or with active birds so that they keep each other on the go!
