One would think that if it were made common practice then down the line at least you be be getting a few generations of pedigree happening , provided of course the person you sell the birds to keeps accurate records also .

Other then being a bit monotonous for the keeper I can't see it being anything other positive. Good records in the form of a pedigree certificate which you can make available to potential buyers will help them to see the time and effort you put into your birds and appreciate what they are taking off your hands.

IF each state had a Govt.? run DNA lab/s where birds had to be/could be tested and banded in order to be sold (I can hear the howls from here) the high turnover of testing would reduce the price. Yes I know many people would bypass the system. But to those it mattered to the information would be available. And no the idea is not to say the bird is pure, it is to say what it is. All mutations in colour and type originally turned up in the nests of "pure" birds. Thats why they are called mutaions. Because something that no one had any control over happened to the gene and it mutated. I would go so far as to say we should do the same thing with PEOPLE. Think of all the diseases that could be cured before they became a problem. Yes people should be entitaled to say, just tell me about the curable ones. Now have fun with these comments. :problem:

You lost me at 'govt.?'. The amount of money the govt.? takes from me for working my butt off is bad enough, they (it) can keep their dirty ahnds off my birds.

Yee god's - Gattica comes to the bird world!!!!!

Could really see us close ringing finches - not.....given that it has to be done in the nest.......don't know if anyone would breed many finches if that were a "rule". The government even tried to foist that one on finch keepers during EBRKS....with no success thank goodness.

Now how does all this fit when discussing Himalayan greenfinches or Javan munias where no "true-blood" species still exist here in Oz........hhhhhmmmmmmmm???????

Should they all be "disposed" of being of mixed blood??????????
Interesting...........

Settle petal ... just because I prefer close rung birds doesnt mean we are going to go Gattaga ... If the bird fraternity wants pure birds then how else is it going to happen ?

Microchipping ? A viable alternative for sure .

There would always be a grey area anyway no matter what method of record keeping is used.

I agree on the close ringing, I prefer birds that are close rung. But when it comes to finches it's just not possible. TBH, I don't think much would work with finches. Other then trying to educate people through books, passing on knowledge etc etc. Just have to let everyone know that cross breeding is not acceptable.

Ermmmm yes , answered this one as a parrot/finch owner . True finches are a hard one OK its has to be down to record keeping but this has its flaws as not all people are honest .

So Ill say  to close ringing parrots and :?: to finches .... very hard.

Having microchipped platypus lets just say there is a scale problem with trying it on finches - that is strictly a large parrot thing!!! Then there is the disease risk of any invasive action..........not viable I'm afraid for finches but would basically prove nought anyway.......all comes back to the sellers word.

People being people you are back to having to trust other bird people again.........as there is no way you can guarantee pure birds I'm afraid.......how long has the human genome project been going for now????

Anway, all a bit of fun on a quiet Tuesday evening!!!! Gunna have to break the bad news to me Himalayans in the morning..........blast!!!!!!!!!
