Don't know the fauna of your area, but the description sounds like Stubble quail to me. Used to be moderately common in the farming areas round here a number of years back. Turning up in headers every now and then. But seem to be less common these days.

Male Stubble Quail Stubble & King, bit hard to guage size with this pic & bird, breed from a line of Kings I use to show.

The ones I saw had none of that silvery looking plumage , it was brown tones .

Thats a lovely little King Quail in the pic.

I see my post was deleted, probably because I said B****y. Well then. The king quail in that pic is REALLY MASSIVE!

Him & his brother, who only has one leg, are the last of the line I have breed since I was 15, It's great grandmother, would just sit in the show cage & wouldn't move till the judge would poke it, she won champion quail at every show she was entered, beating Jap & Californian Quail several times, think she even won champion miscellaneous a couple of times. Bit of a shame though, he's about 6 now, & I don't have any hens to put with him, & all the other suitable cages have got spare male Black-breasted in.

Shame to waste those good genes VR1 .... any chance of 1 more clutch from him .

I'd be calling your bird Brown Quails ;) But I've only ever had fleeting views of wild quails...
