Any of the Ehrharta species (3 here in Oz that are great for bird) are magic over winter - although you'll struggle with Veldt oats but the Veldt panic will power with a minumum of water.

Chickweed powers in fresh turned patched but doesn't handle competition well..............all finches luv it.

The Setarias are also great aviary grasses - Palm & Pit-pit.........although the former can take over..........

Also encourage your neighbours not to mow their lawns as Rye is also a favourite...........

Wouldn't worry about sweet corn as the frozen peas and corn blended with silverbeet, kale and any of the Chinese veggies are great..............mixed with soaked/sprouted seed.

If you're after an aviary plant you can't go past the common ole Genista - yes, I knwo its a weed but it can absorb finch type punishment and recover year after year...........brilliant plant and with those yellow flowers..............and so easy to grow from cuttings............

Feeding.........you can grow the grasses in pots and build a wire cover over the pots so that the finches can only get at the bit growing through the wire............saves your plants and grasses!!
