Another day, another disaster. Today found one of my painted fledglings with a fractured leg. So another trip to the vet who squeezed me in on a busy Sunday. Am left with 7 babies out of the initial 9 and the runt still not off the ground yet. I bring him in at night and put him in the aviary each morning where he stays for the day. Will breathe easier when he's perching with the others, but getting to the stage of wondering what's going to happen next.

Redwing,
7 out of 9? Would be happy with 2 out of 4, Mother nature is a weird and wonderful thing. If the chicks are injured try to help them as best you can but remember they might suffer in the long run from the disability they have suffered as chicks which may hinder them as parents/breeding stock. Would you keep them for their life span or sell them on? Would you buy a bird that has a disability even though it is not hereditary?

I would keep a bird that has a disabillity that is not hereditary without any hesitation as experience has shown this to be just fine. I would also sell the bird if someone was looking for that type and was happy to take my guarantee that is was fine and they could return it within a month if not happy.

Sorry Matcho didn't make myself very clear there. Meant I've had to make the tough decision, with vet advice to euthanase 2 out of my 9 babies in the last 2 days. It's not been a good weekend.

I thought I was the only one who's finches aren't breeding. My stars had 4 babies start of the year and I have just had one painted finch hatch about 2 weeks ago. It was fine yesterday had feather's and seemed okay. This morning found the baby painted on the floor dead, it could not have got out of the nest itself as it was too young.Any suggestions as to what would have happened, would another finch throw it out or I thought it may have got cold and died as the nest was in a hanging basket and was quite an open nest. I have Stars,Red Parrot,Painted, pr of Orange Breasted and 1 pr of Cordons. they all seemed to make nests but nothing happens. I have had the same pr of Cordons and OB for 4 years and they have never bred.I don't want to get rid of them so I think maybe either the hen or the male is a dud. :shifty:

Lynn,
Dont despair, I have had a terrible year so far in regards to the painteds. 4 nests, dead chicks eveywhere, tried to hand raise one and was going great until the mini foxie thought it was a new sqeaky toy with flavouring. Goulds have started late ( 5 so far)but now have 4 nests rangeing from just hatched to nearly fledged. Have Stars nest with little heads poking out out. Should fledge in a couple of days. 2 painted nests, one with hatched. Hopefully things go right. I eally think the weather has played a major part to the results so far, especially in Sydney. Anyhow good luck. As they say "Things can only get better". Lets hope so.

I came home from a night away on sunday arvo to find 4 10 day old gould chicks on the aviary floor, 2 dead and 2 not far away from starvation. Put the two back in the nest and they were dead in the morning, along with the cock bird.

It was quite distressing and I went through one of those "I'm just going to get rid of everything and maybe just keep one pair of this and 1 of that" moments.

Don't know what happened, they were being fed up until that point, and were fed on sunday morning by my wife following my strict instructions. I think it's most likeley the male was not well (he didn't seem to be coping with the cold) and the hen didn't want to feed them on her own??

The rfpf were sitting on eggs (it was their fourth nest, previous two feldged 4) and all of a sudden they dissappeared (it's not mice)

Sorry to hear about your Gouldians you seem to be getting some early cold weather over east that's taking its toll on a lot of peoples birds. Wonder what happened to your RFPF pair?
My runt is now flying and is up with the rest of the babies which is a big relief. Was lucky the dad is so good at feeding him that I ended up just bringing him in each evening to a hot box and back in the aviary each day.
