So my take on this thread is:
Captive finch populations probably won't be used to restock wild populations unless there is no wild population left.
This is because:
1. They have unknown genetic origins and may be a mixture of bloodlines from several geographical regions.
2. Because of concerns over domestication effects that occur whenever captive breeding takes place.
This makes me a little defensive so I would add:
1. Captive populations of finches that are not split for domestic colour varieties still have value because people like them and do seek them out.
2. Conservation of domestic stocks is important even if it does little to help wild stocks.
