As a rule of thumb I've always worked on 1pr per 1 square meter of floor space. Depending on the specie's if they habituate different levels this number may be able to be increased, depending on the height of the aviary. (Now the confession I have been known to break my own rule especially when there are young  )

Nathan, if I recall correctly, didn't you have a few pairs of zebs and a cockatiel in your larger aviary with some goudlians. Why not move the zebs/cockatiel into the new 2 by 2 aviary and add new species in with the gouldians? My advice would be to keep it simple - painteds, longtails, stars or plumheads would be fine given you like the natives. And Nathan, I can guarantee there are plenty of mice about on the northern beaches - they will find your place eventually.

Tuthless jaws this is my 3rd aviary not my first so I do know the Basics of finch keeping. And the reason why I sed there are no rodents were I live ( I Know its false ) Is beacouse i have had finches for 8 years and never had a rodent problem.

Sam I have in my bigest aviary 7 gouldians , 12 zebra finches (8 are babys ) , 4 star finches , 1 blue faced parrot finch (It's mate died ) , 2 sociaty finches ( There technacilly my brothers) , 2 diamond doves , 1 cockatial , 1 red rump. I Can't find eney were to buy plumheades from there in none of the pet shops and I know one pet shop that sells long tails but the $100 a pair and i would like to buy them a bit cheaper than that.

Thanks Nathan

How big is your biggest aviary? And what size and birds are in your second aviary?

Is the 2X1 also a lawn locker style col western cage? If so then it might be possible to reconfigure the 2X1 and the new 2X2 so they're joined. Try to think about the individual panels you have that make up the two aviaries. Maybe try to include a safety door area measuring 1X1, a holding cage measuring say 1X1 or so and then the rest as a larger aviary.

As I think others have said previously - not comfortable with the cockatiel and red rump in with the finches - the bourkes maybe ok in your larger aviary with finches. I've got pairs of longtails and plumheads, but you've probably got enough breeding pairs as it stands, by the sound of it.

I wouldn't ever recomending Red-rumps and Cockatiels in with Finches in even an aviary 14m2... But some people manage it alright...

Yesh, but there are 28 birds in there already, before you include the Parrots... The size isn't the issue, the crowding is...
