Nathan poison no protect yes. Butcher birds are predators so prevention or stopping/limiting the opportunities is all we can do.

I would have to agree with wagga poisoning butcher birds isn't the answer, they a hungry and looking for a meal so bird netting draped over the front of aviery and angle it to the floor so they can't touch your wire. If you are going to poison them don't mention it because that would be illegal.

Please explain to us how you will guarantee that the butcher bird will be the only one to consume the poison.

No Nathan , we do not poison Butcher Birds .

Its just doing what comes natural to it , its up to us to protect the aviary / cage from it .

I have learned the hard way that finches in cages put outside for fresh air are predator magnets ..I lost a Firetail to a Butcher Bird attack , the bloody thing wasnt even hungry as it emptied its crop beside the dead birds cage .

Just a FYI I put any caged birds inside a screen door or in the safety door of an aviary so as to deter predators but still give the caged bird fresh air /sunshine.


As said how the hell can you control who takes the poison ...please do NOT do this as well as being WRONG it is ILLEGAL .
And the poisoned bird wont die conveniently in your yard it could go anywhere and be eaten by someone beloved pet .

Sheesh . I am not liking this post at all mate and I will be very dissapointed if you go through with it .

Well that butcher bird killed an $80 finch I don’t have the money to pay $80 every day when that butcher bird decides to have one of my finches for lunch I hate Butcher birds. This is the 4th time a Butcher bird has killed one of my finches.

I understand your frustration Nathan that you lost a bird in that way, if you poison the butcher bird what everybody else is saying what other animals are going to be affected such as other birds consuming the poisoned food. What about other predatory birds, cats or dogs that attack and consume the poisoned butcher bird it will kill them. Not knowing much about butcher birds I think that they are protective of there area so if you kill this one more will come. Best thing is preventioned against them so this never happens again.

bird netting is your answer nathan , the buggeres will attack anything even in a large aviary, they only do it for food not for fun. have bird netting any where form 5 to 10 cam away from the aviary as a deterant or use a sheild of pespex against the wire where a perch maybe.

The thing is if you get rid of it another will takes its place..... pete
