I've also found extreme thirst to be a better motivator than sweeteners, but as you say they always have a far bigger drink when the clean water returns so this puts the effective dose into question.

Q drench is an interesting product. It is a combination drench containing abamectin (same family as ivermectin/moxidectin); albendazole ( a white drench or benzimidazole related to fenbendazole(panacur) and oxfendazole) and levamisole ie 3 different wormer groups PLUS closantel( used to treat fluke & some tapeworms).finches247 wrote:i use Q Drench NZ Brand
At first glance it would appear to be the ideal wormer- having 3 different wormers you would think that the chances of the worms becoming resistant to all 3 are pretty slim.
However, you are in fact selecting for MULTIPLE resistance at the same time every time you use it, especially if the birds don't consume the correct amount. The ratios of drugs are designed for sheep/goats- not for birds. My concern is that if Q Drench is used routinely we will end up with no other wormers to use if the worms become resistant to the combination in Q drench.
Its effectiveness against tapeworm is reliant on the albendazole component, which is not as effective as praziquantel.
I have not used this product for the above reasons, but if you find it useful finches 247 then that's interesting.
What dose do you use?

In-water medication is a bit hit-and-miss at the best of times, let alone when dealing with a palatability issue.
But it seems to work- in most cases!

Yea i have left moxidectin plus in for up to 5 days to make sure and definatly less water was drunk then normal. But i feel better knowing theyve had to have some no matter what. IVe never felt that 24 or 48 hours cuts it when administering in water. Great topic tiaris and interesting read. Once again im learning alot. I Also was worried about worms and live food.
