Same here, every bird has split plastic leg bands, each bird has a different combination of colours colour = number and the number refers to an individual bird record which gives parents, dates, breeding records, medications etc etc

I use numbered coloured split rings and use a different colour each year, that way I can easily tell the year each bird was bred. I always put the ring on the birds right leg and with the number the correct way up so I can read it when the bird is stood on a perch.
I get my rings from http://www.achughes.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; they are in the UK so takes a couple of weeks but are good quality rings.

They're maily for identification as Normal zebras are quite identical. And for personal records which have/will keeep for selling purposes so i don't sell the mum or dad, some proof of age. This is my first clutch and don't want to or don't feel confident in handling the babies in the nest so I think split rings after fledging is the way to go thanks all for your advice and helping me decide!!!
:)
Kind regards MEL

Do you use the plastic ones? Are the numbers easily seen from outside the aviary? Do you get the C size for your gouldians? Which type the Darvic or the Celluloid?
Sorry about all the questions but Ive been trying to make my mind up using another type of band. Im happy with mine at the moment, but they are a bit clunky when compared to the split metal. At the moment I can look at a bird from outside the aviary see the coloured bands easily and know the number of the bird.

Hi

I use the plastic Darvic ones size XF for Gouldians, they are not that easy to read unless the bird is fairly close to the wire and then only if the ring is rotated with the number visable, I have bought some off ebay which are a bit Clunky the ones from AC hughes are good quality.

I did think about using two colours like you do but with only 10 colours there is only 100 combinations, depending how many birds and different types you breed that may be ok.

I only use single colours but the system can be used up to 999.

Ok that sounds good, how does it work ? from 10 colours I could only get 99 combinations if one ring on each leg.
I have seen people put two rings on a leg to get more combinations but I'm not keen on that.

Its the same idea but I have been cutting the ring down.
So for a bird with a 3 digit reference number I have
half pink on the top
half blue on the bottom on one leg and a full band of green on the other
So that bird would be number 134

Never thought of cutting them in half to make more colour combinations, good idea.
