The correct terminology for this is Polygyne (multiple queens) as apposed to monogyne (one queen) some species do and some species dont in the insect world. These pictures are of mature queens ie they have lost their wings. Young queens (alates) are smaller and have their wings. They take flight and usualy mate on the wing before drifting down to earth and dropping the wings to set up a new colony. Once they drop their wings they dont grow them again.
The word takes many forms and in the human world someone is referred to politely as being polygamous amongst other things.
