Some lawn seed mixes have rye grass in them if you are thinking of planting a lawn and want to sneak some finch food in too.

Australian grassfinches love it for the seed and as a nesting material, also my weavers would build their woven nests with rye grass. I used to cut the stems about 30cms long, bunch together, tie and hang from the ceiling.

Some farmers use a short term annual rye grass. This can grow to over a metre in height! Seed can be bought from most farm supply agencies like Landmark or even directly from seed companies. Prices range from $1.60- $2.50+ per kilo.

The ones I use are Guinea Grass, wild milllet, wild oats, and "lawn" rye grass. All get cut or picked green and fed straight away.

Wondering if someone could identify this one for me? Im in SEQld and have usually located nearby waterway in part shade and is about the same height as green panic. Have fine hairs on the seed head itself sometimes with a purple hue. Birds go nuts for it. Thanks, Chris

I call it water grass. Often found in drainage channels, creek banks near water, dam edges, etc. - likes wet feet. In the barnyard grass family. Excellent finch tucker.
