You could probably start your own I confess with that statement.
I was "told" to but refused  . The first time it was kinda my fault and we had dozens around the house, including one who chirped under the freezer for yonks, we wound up moving the freezer to catch them. I have no explanation for today's escapees as I checked the lid now and it's secure. Time to buy them they're own tank methinks instead of relying on the tubes Gerry ships them in.

If you dont want to do live food then just try to keep species that can do without. Each to thier own and if you enjoy what your doing then why change and make bird keeping a chore. If you kept rare and expensive species then you could expect some backlash for not feeding the required diet. Gouldians would be a good choice if your not wanting to feed livefood and perhaps strive for species that are happy without it >

I've got two of them and they work really well. You just remove the trap container at the bottom and shake the insects out into the aviary each day. What could be simpler?

Im sure they do work SamDavis and they are a great idea, however they arent a consistent supply of live food that is required when rearing young ones. They are great to provide variety and top what is already fed but for parts of the year (winter here) and on windy nights they generally provide very little.

All true desertbirds - can't be relied on as the sole livefood source for livefood species. I also feed termites and maggots. But I reckon they'd be great for those with only stars/painteds/etc. to supply some livefood during the warmer months.

I agree entirely - we've had birds for years and had heaps of enjoyment out of them, we just chose the ones that didn't need live food. They're just as much fun to watch!

Speak for yourself - nothing quite beats my crimson chats smashing a well fought over cricket against the ground  (that's after we've chased the crickets around the house first to get them fit and healthy).

(For those who don't know, we are watching the same birds from the same kitchen window ;-) )

Thanks all for the reply/support/suggestions.... :)
I keep diamonds,masked,redbrows,blue-faced,painted,gouldian,star,yellowrumps,doublebars,chestnuts,plumheads and ruddies....phew i didnt think it was that many....i'm sure some of them would appreciate termites.
I have been fortunate that all have bred with various levels of success to date over the last few seasons.

I purchased 4 masked finches from a notable local breeder two seasons back who feeds termites to all his birds, so was not expecting immediate success, within six months i had two nests of 5 young!! These 4 originals now equate to over 30.
I strive to keep a constant supply of seeding heads/greenfood from many sources. Also i mix my own seed/tonic mix of barnyard grass plus others, so i still manage to pamper them i think.
I plan to continue as is until retirement(10 years or less hopefully) then may expand(build a mega aviary) and chase some termites with more time on hand.
Then i may be able to provide for pictorella's and such.
Good luck to those of you up to your elbows in maggots and mealworms....hope the birds appreciate it.
For me it would be a fast-track to the divorce court.... .... hey now wait a minute.... :silent: better quit while i'm ahead
