Love your avatar Westfinch. VP it is obviously time to add at least 1 pair of canarys to your finches.
Glosters are the best. But I regret the change in them over recent years. Once they were small and crested. Now they are becoming ugly great lumps like so many other canarys. Me for breeding the smallest Glosters I can get. Yes I know it;s a matter of personal taste. But that is how we wound up with the different types in the first place.

Westfinch, what else have you got in with the eggfood? Is that sprouted seed, and if it is what seed do you use? How do you sprout it, that is soak for 24 hours and then spread on hessian, or ............

I also feed sprouted seed, but I buy a pre-packaged sprouting seed mix from Elenbee.

I also agree that this year is a good year and I have 11 chicks in the nest at the moment.

Great minds think alike FB I to like the smaller Glosters and that is what I am breeding this year i hope to have some champions.

Canary it is canola mixed in with finch mix and sprouted in vircon s for 12 hours drained and left in the container to sprout . I feed this until eggs are laid and after the chicks are rung.I also mix the egg with a biscuit and oats mix that has been through the food processor .Only tried this mix this year and so far so good. Also the egg is pushed through a sieve with a spoon and comes out perfect to mix with the biscuit mix.

I used to breed Glosters when I was a kid too. I especially liked the "Beatles haircut" ones with yellow or white body and dark crest.

West Finch, what is the latest update on your young hatchlings.

I now have 18 chicks from 7 nests, with a further 2 hens on eggs, although I candled the 2 nests of eggs tonight and they only appear to have 1 fertile egg each.

The other thing that gets me is why my 2 best hens only had 1 fertile egg and now have 1 chick each in their nest.
