I hit the Palm Grass with seasol ( fish emulsion ) its powering now ...for a while I thought it was going to be a dud .

Note to self ..water in bucket first then seasol or check the pressure in the hose before attempting to fill bucket ...not that great a smell when it hits the skin.

Yes, why not grow your own, I grow any seeds that will grow from the "Finch Mix", plus the Decorative Amaranth and the Australian Niger when available! I even tried the Perilla and the Chia. http://www.discussion.1accesshost.com/index8.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Is it too late to try again this year ? Just with what seeds I have on hand ( parrot , finch and millet )

You may have to turn the soil over and water it well daily (for best results) early in the morning. Some seeds grow better when planted in late Winter other in Spring, some will grow at any time. The easiest to grow is the Japanese Millet and Canola and certainly the Milk and Saw Thistles.

Mine didnt look that good either, always seem to go yellow if I left it for too long so I used to grow it till it was about 3 or 4 inches then give the whole thing to the birds in the pot. Never had any seed on it but the birds went to town on the green growth.

Netsurfer, do my eyes deceive me or is that Amaranth plant putting out multiple 'spray' like heads of seeds? If so and the birds go for them, do you feed green and how can us finchos get hold of this plant or seeds to grow ourselves? Any info appreciated

Yes the plant puts out multiple heads sprays of seeds, there are several varieties, the prettiest is the 2m tall burgundy color plant. Originally I brought mine (tall green variety) from Peru (legally) when I was there some years ago. However, unfortunately I have lost that plant since, I now buy all my seed producing plants of "Diggers Club" http://www.diggers.com.au/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I even bought Quinoa, Chia and Perilla (black and the white variety). They also have the wild small Sunflower as well as many other varieties, colors and sizes of Sunflowers. Small Sunflower is ideal food for Siskins and Goldfinches, the seeds are just a little bigger than the Niger seeds.

Well rather than waste any time running around searching for seed Ive started my bird seed garden just using the seed I had on hand. I divided an area up and have finch seed in the larger area, red panic and canary in another and in a small area a mixed treat seed, hopefully something out of all the different varieties will sprout. Will be off to the seed suppliers tomorrow hopefully and get a few different seed, I know I can get jap millet and panorama for sure.

Same BB Im taking over the vegie garden ( already turned ) and doing 3 patches .. millet from the bottom of the bag of millet I bought from Forbes Sale , old parrot mix and a patch of finch mix ....

Wish me luck , wish me rain and wish me seasol , lots and lots of seasol .
