Have never bothered to clean cuttle fish just cannot see the point.
After collecting it from the beach it is placed in a wire mesh bag and hung in the sun for a month to dry out completely.
Once dry it is hung in the shed until needed. At this time I chuck it in the cement mixer with some nice solid pieces of granite.
Comes out nice and fine. I also crush oystershell in this way.

Ive grated cuttlefish to add to crushed eggshells

We give the cuttlefish bone whole, and they just pick at it. Probably keeps their beak trim too! And then we have a mix with grit, charcoal and eggshell that they can also pick from.

When i gather cuttlefish bone,i do not clean it , the birds love the sand and grit,i leave anything that doesnt look good,i figure there is so much of it why bother,there is a lot of little stuff that people dont pick up ,i do, and when mixing soaked seed,with a serrated knife scrape it over the seed,have not had a egg bound bird since,touch wood,ps the birds love beach sand but your not aloud to remove it,cheers garyh .

Just give it to them whole and mixed unwashed and washed. Am also of the oppinion that pecking at it is good for the beak. And the salt seems to be good too. What do you mean you can't remove beach sand? Does that mean if someone sees me they can do me for illegal practices?

I also don't wash it. I also just leave any off colour bits on the beach. And hang it in the sun for a while then a dry place in the shed until needed.
