Deb,

Do you mean "life without birds" as in not having them as your pastime/hobby/obsession? I had birds as a kid and then there was the 30-40 year hiatus in regards to keeping them, BUT I always had a bird book in the car and could have classed myself as a "twitcher" but never admitted it because my work didn't really align with that past time. I was lucky enough to work with a fellow cop on a trip who was the same as me. He was an absolute legend in the real hard areas of Police work (read SWOS, Anti Terrorism etc) but a real softie when it came to our feathered friends.

Yes Deb, there is life without captive birds, just sit in the backyard and wait and watch. Even some of the introduced birds can pull heartstrings. Afterall they are all God's creatures.

PS.

With birds I cant go away fishing as much as I used to which has probably made the home life a little more stable so I shudder to think of "life without birds".

eh matcho,
your words strike a quord. It is only recently that i have reacquainted myself with finches after a long long absence with the hobby as a teenager. Having come from 3 generations of miners and spent 25 years in mining myself, I am often surprised by what snippets of satisfaction are derived from the "art of keeping birds" from such 'hard men'. Discussing the merits of one species over another with a like minded acquaintance or colleague adds a certain degree of satisfaction and meaningfulness. What i find amazing now is how technology, viz , internet, search engines, forums, etc help to find solutions or answers to questions almost instantaneous, only limited by your imagination or desire to ask those seemingly 'dumb' questions. And my other half, is actually supportive and is taking an interest, so bugger me...... and my older teenagers are also taking a bit of interest, so lifes not that bad i feel.

I have recently sold off or relocated all my birds. This will be only, hopefully, for 6 to 12 months until I move house and rebuild the aviaries again. The feeling of emptiness comes time mind when I walk out the back to find the aviaries are gone. I find each weekend that an excuse is made to visit my good friend who is 'temporarily' minding some of my finches that I could not let let go. Even today I drove out to his property to quickly, 2 1/2 hours latter, check the birds. When I finally left we both made the decision to convert the temp holding aviary into a breeding aviary. It is hard to see my weaver colony in full colour and just wasting the short breeding season in a bare holding aviary.
By now you might have realised that the bird bug bits hard and a addicted fincho goes to any measure to get a fix. Hence why I am on the net at 2.30.
Life in Port Macquarie is the ultimate Aussie sea change lifestyle.

when i sold my birds off in 1989 it was a really hard thing to do. i am a nature-geek and love all life, and straight away focused on my fish, as i could take them with me to uni. so for 20-odd years i honed my fish-craft - but they were only ever a poor substitute for birds. now that i have an aviary again i feel complete again. birds are miracles of (insert evolutionary or deity process here) design. they are masters of the air, an element that we can only control because of our brains - they do it with their bodies. there is total presence in a bird. i don't plan to ever be without them again.

If I didn't have birds I would be sleeping in on this chilly Sunday morning .
If I didn't have birds I would be sleeping in on most mornings .

Chronic pain takes away the motivation to rise and shine however having birds gives me back that motivation ....call it therapy.

I closed down my an aviary today - 2 to go. It would have happend a couple of weeks ago but I noticed a pair of cut-throats had snuck in a nest but today they were off and I found the nest cold and abandoned. I didn't even look to see if they died in shell as that would have only added insut to injury. Most of the finches will go this weekend. I'll miss them having gone without for so long but I will certainly start up again in Brisbane as soon as we're in a house. My first stipulation is a back yard that's not all pool! Having lived most of my life in the country (or even out of the country) it might take some adjustment.

I would just be living with our 3 dogs, 3.5 cats and fish...

We got our first weiro about 18months ago, then we got another about 6 months ago........
Then we got the scaly breasted lorikeet in october.......... lol

Then we got the aviary in late october.................... Now it's full of finches.. and a couple canaries......

I'd say the majority of my earnings go on my animals.. I guess it's okay when you don't have children :)
I have fur children :)

Ticketed MML-SYD Dec 22 then SYD-BNE Jan 3. They say it's Gods own country and compared to here I'm sure it is. The 3 kids will keep me busy as will looking for a job but a life without birds - Never!
