Breeding Mealworms

Hi Flap, I may be wrong but I think that the beetles eat the eggs so you are not getting the full number of worms. My first lot of worms are now growing
quite quickly, when I feed them out I just need to scoop out some bran into a sieve shake out the bran and the sieve is full of worms. The second batch is just hatching so I should be able to freeze some of the first batch and so on. As I said each one to their own method , mine seems to be working well for me.

Thanks Greg, didn't know about the beetles. Not even sure what the eggs are meant to look like, maybe that is the reason why!!! :lo:

Thanks Bushranger. That's what I'm hoping to do also. Considering there one of the easiest insects to breed, should be no problems! We'll see...

Yay i have beetles now , to be honest I keep forgeting about them and when we went away expected to come home to them all dead. Moved them into small Tank now

I know lots of people separate the different stages but to be honest I always have more than enough for my needs. As long as I make sure there's always a carrot for food and moisture. Don't even need to seive to find the worms as big numbers always shelter between the 2 layers of face cloth. Flap has been agisting my colony for the last 2 months and think she 's also found there were plenty. Think if you have big numbers of birds and were breeding a variety of livefood on a large scale you would be wanting to minimise losses. It's always good to see how other people do things and then adapt to your own setup.

Oh didnt know the Beetles eat the eggs , so could just throw beetles after a while into Aviary then when there a lot of allsorts in there ?

I do not separate mine and they have been going for about 5 years. I find enough for a treat (I only have zebs, canary and quail) gathered under a bana skin or around a carrot.

An update on my mealworm project. After several weeks, the worms are finally starting to turn into beetles. I've got two seperate draws where they all in together so for the mean time, I will leave them together and see how things go before considering the seperation process that some have suggested. Hopefully in the very near future I wont have to buy mealworms anymore!
