Paul they're getting a mix of the frozen (in limited quantities) green heads from my guinea grass and dry. It's the most obvious in the breeding cages where the portions are harder to control so I've changed it around and am only giving once every 2-3 days now.

Natamambo Hi, I did notice the droppings were a bit loose but have stopped feeding guinea grass seed altogether. In fact my birds stopped eating grass seeds that i supply and only eat the green white millet.I think we may have been double dosing them with green seed, any how alls fine now. Cheers Craig

Would you be willing to explain green seed to me, why it is frozen, and the difference with the green seed in mixes? And why it is so good for the birds? If it is really that good, would it be possible for me to purchase some? Right now I give my birds Greens and Gains tsp daily, even extra cocks so they won't be left out.

BluJay Hi if you go to the top of this posting and read right through, there was some interesting questions and answers before members decided to go into this exercise and was very informative

Thanks, Crocnshas, I skimmed over it, very interesting, guess, I wanted to get to the link at an earlier post, which I did, so green seed and milk seed are one in the same, with the exception, it is harvested sooner (than green seed in mix?) and frozen....? The remainder of the post, was organising bulk purchase and how good it is. Would not mind giving it go. So will skim back to do a pm to find out if avialble, and how to get it here.
Took me a minute to understand frozen seed, as back in the states, I used to Freeze seed overnight, to trick it into faster germination, for sprouting. Something I picked up from landscaping, when seeding my lawn, would leave grass seed in freezer overnight.

Blujay yes Green seed is the same as milk seed. Freezing it is the way to keep it in that state so you can continue feeding them the Green seed for months without it drying out and losing and nutritional elements. Being in NSW I wouldn't know which direction to point you in, someone may help. As for the greens and grain I find my gouldians devour it especially now with chicks in the nest.

Thanks, Djb78, it makes sense. My trick to sprouting really well, is that it is my understanding, seed is in a dormant state, and by freezing over night, it tricks it in to thinking it has been sleep all winter long, and the warmth, makes it germinate faster. Has worked like a charm here. Would be interesting to plant some of the seeds, and learn when best to haverst for green seed. Wonder, if GREEN SEED FROM RAY & WENDY LOWE, could be shipped overnight?

BluJay I worked in a gene bank for many years and so called stratification (cold treatment) is used to trick plants like winter wheat to change from a vegetative state to a reproductive state. Dormant cereal seeds are prematurely aged by heating (held at 50oC for 3 days) and are held in stasis by storing them at -18oC. I think your seeds weren't tricked into germinating by freezing overnight - they would have germinated anyway but if you had any insects in the sample it would have fixed them up if the sample wasn't too big and insulated them from the cold.
