Most pairs here on first round eggs. Not counting any chickens before they hatch though.

I've just completed my new aviary and transferred the birds today. There's already a fair bit of interest in the nests so
fingers crossed there will be some action in the next week.
Cheers Grant

Thanks Flavio for your encouragement..
I find it a little bit frustrating, that I have put so much research into the birds; and have tried to mitigate any sort of health issues and problems...that I feel that I have missed something that is staring me in the face....
I guess that it shows that bird keeping, can be a reality check, one cannot plan for all events...
I have spent the last two years, developing a plan for my birds & within ten weeks it's not happening...you can give them the best conditions, you can pick the best birds....but,a spanner can be thrown into the works.....
I guess this is what makes breeding birds so fulfilling....the need to adapt your best laid plans to what is actually happening!
I apologise to being a touch negative and disheartened, but sometimes....

A good note to end my self indulgent frustration, my cock gouldian that I thought would not have lasted the night, is still kicking on....I know that I cannot breed from him this year, but let's hope next year, his genes can be passed on...

Cheers
Ripley

Ripley, your birds will catch up im sure, but your right it can be frustrating sometimes especially when you give it your all.
Are you getting that wet weather? Could be the cause..

Flav, I put my boxes in last week and my birds are starting to pair up and a couple pairs are building nests. Blue hens have really dark colored beaks. I hate waiting!

Its been hot here up north and the wet season doesnt seem to be showing itself (compared to our massive wet last year!!!). I put boxes in a couple weeks ago and 5 pairs have settled down n eggs with one pair on 7 eggs!!! Pretty sure 2 clutches are due to hatch this weekend and the others throughout next week :)

Other birds seem to be settling down too!

Hi Ripley
In the beginning it's hard with Gouldians, you are starting off with birds others have moved on for some reason, some of the birds will be good but there will be other reasons why some may have been sold, as you start to breed your own stock they will be birds bred in your avaires/cages which are likely to be better and you will know the history of them.

You could send a fresh dropping sample to Dr Rob Marshall for culture, it will cost you $150-$200 which is expensive but he will be able to give you good advice on what he finds and supply you with suitable mediction if required.

Hi Ripley,
There is no nead to apologise sametime your best laid plans dont actually happen,
but at least you know you did your best sametime it coud be youre blood lines
but dont give up,over the 30 years that I have breeding gouldians I have had same very low times
did every thing right and it did not work, but then same very good times more good than bad
when it all clicks together thats what gouldians are all about, what simba and mackstaa advice
is right.
cheers and good luck hope it gets better for you, flavio

Its still early days, the season has just begun so there's plenty of time for improved results this season. Some of my pairs haven't nested yet either but they could end up being the most productive pairs by the time the boxes are taken out in July.

So far two young and a clutch abandoned, 3 pairs building nests and 4 still waiting to get going.
