Guppies are cheap and easily obtained and eat wrigglers with great delight. That is my idea of a pond EOrix

PS. Retired, so good luck timing your unsolicited visit! :P

PPS. See introductions for what else I "have secreted away" :silent:

Classic. Why don't you say what you really think about each other?

Back to the pond issue! A pond is an obvious asset for birds that can swim well, or are shore or water birds. As far as a pond in an aviary (note spelling aviAry) containing only finches, I would not have it any deeper than about an inch ( 2.5cm) regardless of the width unless you don't mind loosing a few fledglings to cold or drowning. They have an uncanny knack of ending up in the water. I have a friend with an aviary about 50 mtrs by about 20 mtrs wide and a 6 mtr high domed roof. Running through this is an artificial, running creek (30 - 45 cm deep) with waterfall, water lilies and fish. Housed in this aviary are hundreds of gouldians and other finches, some small parrots, Spinifex Pigeons, and fruit doves. He rarely looses any birds to the water, in fact they bathe on the water lily leaves and eat the algae growing on the sides. My point is that these birds are tough and exposed to the elements and the ratio of water to the area of the aviary is small, whereas a largish pond in a small aviary could spell disaster.

Yep I’ve been to see that aviary Tint and it is quite impressive . and yes a small area of water compared to floor area . I think a pond is only suited to larger aviaries .

i agree westy
ponds only in large aviaries. its too risky for younguns when 40-50% of floor area is a death-trap for them.
i have lost fledgling yellowrumps in less than 35mm of water(not a pond) but the adults love to bathe as well so a compromise is best.

myzo and tiaris...for your info i have made up with the tintola for now....
