Your last question is your answer Harvey. The mere fact that you think aloud "softbills or parrots??" says you aren't ready. The mere fact that you think plunging in with $3000 a pair is acceptable makes it look like you are just after the attention and if so sadly the birds will be the casualty. The mere fact that you ask "where can I buy that book" when a direct link to the seller was provided says that you haven't even bothered to do that much research (ie click on a link to see what happens).
Until you have the maturity to learn by advice and make informed decisions, plan and prepare in advance and know exactly why you are doing it, stay clear of the poor softbills (words harsh I know but deliberately and carefully chosen).
If you really want to prove us wrong, successfully breed silvereyes and then more people here will take you seriously.

Birds R Us sell the Rosemary Hutton bird. If they are sold out, abk sell it http://www.birdkeeper.com.au/other-bird ... management" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Maybe if you join the local finch club you can make contact with some local softbill breeders. http://www.hunterfinches.websyte.com.au/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Silvereyes up close are magnificent little birds http://photogallery.canberrabirds.org.au/silvereye.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Don't worry Pete I wasn't even looking at softbills as they are outa my reach and this thread has just proven which is for the best for the birds and me as my time with my birds are limited and don't have the luxury to feed them 2-3 times a day. I'm happy to listen and see everybodies success and photos and hope one day that there maybe a window but definitely not this side of 20 years. I'm glad this topic arose as there is some great info on how to start as I hoped because there are probably alot of people that just may want to start and just don't know which direction to start in. It would be a good idea to start with the more insectivorous types as this has proven to me just how expensive feeding can be and I only have had RC cordons, blue caps And Cubans which are little guts when chicks come. I would hate to imagine what a softbill bill would be like for a week when they have young because they would require alot more livefood than my little guys do. To everyone breeding them keep up the good effort and all the best
.

Harvey,
I would love soft bills but just don't think I could handle them with the food requirements, live food, fruits, etc etc etc, and I have a heap of time on my hands as I am recently retired. I too would die for a pair of Pekins but as they said in the Castle "Tell him he's dreamin!". I even have shied away from finches that require a lot of insect food. If I was going to have a lash at softbills I would go for something larger to start with, bul buls or maybe blackbirds because the fruit and insectivore mixes and live food is fairly easy to come by. If I did OK then, maybe, and I mean maybe I might try for something that requires a little bit more attention. One thing is a dead set prerequisite.... avairy size, the bigger the better with natural plantings, live plants, shrubs etc. If you aint got that, forget it.
Food for thought. Maybe in years down the track you may be lucky to own property which enables you to have avairies large enough to accommodate softbills so they may thrive. Don't rush.
