slowwwww response i know but better late than .....
just reading your confession danny....sorry for your losses.
i must say i agree with tintola regarding the birds taste sense!!
i thought keeping the bait away from the birds was hard enough....let alone the mouse poop.
i was wondering how/why the rodents have access to the feed trays?
i have elevated all seed/food approx 600mm off the floor with good results using plastic cable drum reels(free and last forever).
they are smooth/slippery and high enough to restrict the little buggers access to the feed. a feed tray with a high lip and presto....all that falls to the floor is husk.
Any mice in the aviary seem hungrier naturally and take baits with more gusto, a quicker kill means less time for the mice to deposit the poison via droppings.
i know parrotfinches in particular will find trouble if possible in an aviary because of their inquisitive nature but it may help at least.
as you say a different colour bait rather than green is a good idea anyway.
some also try to restrict water access from the mice to make their stay less comfortable....i have not gone this far yet.

i hope by now you are winning the battle with the little furry buggers ....winter approaching will only force more into seeking shelter in our aviarys.

They are actually foraging the mouse poos on the aviary floor - they can't get to the waste seed or anything else on the feeders.
I haven't had a death in 5 days but lost another 8 since my last post.

:o Ouch! I hope Wendy either doesn't read these posts or isnt easily offended
She is well aware of her limitations. Last night she had to work and my 6 year old came into the kitchen and asked if I had started dinner as he couldn't see any smoke yet.

At least she knows how to turn the heat on... you just have to teach her when to turn it off again!

Just as well that she's a good vet Danny.

So what are your cooking skills like? And no, bird softfood mix,as nutritious as it is, is not considered cooking suitable for your kids!! Although I'm sure you tell them otherwise

My cooking skills are good enough for me and the kids but Wendy hates the foods I like so she rather eat her food charred than mine cooked to perfection.
Softbill food and kids is another problem alltogether - little Robbie loves it. You go inside to answer the phone and come back to find he's eaten the top two bowls.
